  1. Background of the Department
    1. Establishment 

The department was started in 2004 by the name of Purchasing and Supply Management.  It has produced hundreds of qualified professionals in the area and most of them are now working in big and small organizations including teaching in different universities and colleges of the country. Our alumni are working as purchasing officers, officers of supply management, inspection, and quality officer, store operation manager, transportation and logistics manager, Custom officer, material manager and in a host of operational areas.

The accelerated rate of change in the world economy is driven by an empowered consumer; a shift in economic power toward the end of the supply chain; deregulation of key industries; globalization; and technology are all forced the department to upgrade itself to Logistics and Supply Chain Management in 2007-08.  The department is now organized in a new way and working strongly towards this uncontrolled Global Phenomenon and to produce professionals which can go side by side and respond appropriately to the requirement of Local and Global companies. To achieve its objectives the department is currently offering courses and practical training, which makes the learner to be competitive in Logistics and supply chain areas.

The department is now well organized in Human, financial, and required equipment that facilitates the smooth teaching-learning process. With regard to teaching staff, the department is intensively working to upgrade its teaching staff to postgraduate and doctoral levels and most of the staff members are presently attending their higher studies within the country and abroad.

In addition to the normal teaching-learning process, the department is planning to give short and long term training for industries on areas ; logistic operation, supply chain concept and practices, transportation management, government purchasing and practices, total quality management concept and practice, store operation management, import-export and custom clearing procedures and in others operational areas.

Mission/Purpose

In line with the mission of the University, the LSCM department is committed to producing ethical and competent graduates with knowledge and skills in Logistics and Supply Chain Management; conducting research and community service with entrepreneurial training to support the industrial and socio-economic development of the country.

Vision

The vision of LSCM is to be globally recognized as one of the distinguished centers for excellence in Logistics and Supply Chain Management from East Africa by 2030.

Values

Below are the bedrock values of Arsi University and CoBE that are directly cascaded to the LSCM department too. These principles shall be held in the highest regard at all times and form the basis of our actions and interactions. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

For course works: Quizzes, tests, project works, assignments, mid semester exams, and final exams

For practical works: Fieldtrip, Practical examinations

For senior essays and other paper works: Quality of papers presented, ways of presentation, defending materials presented etc

The assessment and evaluation methods for each course are determined by the nature of the courses, but in most of the courses the evaluation will have two parts:

  • Continuous Assessment (tests, quizzes assignments, projects presentation and others) takes 50 percent

Final Exam takes the remaining 50 percent

  • DEGREE NOMENCLATURE

Up on successful completion of a four years program covering a total of 244 ECTS or 149 Credit hours courses, students will earn a “Bachelor of Arts Degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management” in Amharic translation “የአርትባችለር ድግሪ በሎጂስቲክስና ሰፕላይቼን ማኔጅመንት”

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

Admission to all regular degree programs is based on the national admissions requirements set by the Ministry of Education.

DURATION OF THE STUDY

The duration of the program is four years.

MODE OF DELIVERY

Due to complexity of some courses mode of delivery to the program of the whole courses is semester based.

METHOD OF TEACHING

The teaching learning process include a variety of instructional strategies to accommodate various students learning style and provides opportunities that will help students to construct their understanding of the concepts and practices of the respective courses involved. The program uses various types of teaching and learning methods appropriate to each course. The method may use one or more of the following: Lectures, Discussions, Simulations, Term Paper, Industry visit/ filed trip, Research Projects, Case Studies, Computer Lab Work, Presentation, Problem based learning, Article Review…
