The primary focus of Social science being to help citizens understand how to interact with the social and physical world and that of humanities being to help citizens understand others through their languages, history, and cultures, and also to encourage them to think creatively by making informed decisions, the college has been attempting to meet its mission.
In order for it to meet this mission it formed six departments: Afan Oromo and Literature, English Language and Literature, History, Sociology and Social Work, Geography and Environmental Studies, and Civic and ethical Education departments, and has been running various programs in both undergraduates and postgraduates in regular, summer and weekend programs
About the Colleges
The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CoSSH), as one of the constituent colleges in Arsi University, kept its full and experienced staff members and went on running it’s already opened up programs and went on diversifying them. Accordingly, in the year 2022 CoSSH has qualified and experienced staff members who are handling teaching, researching, and community service activities. Totally, there are 123 academic staffs in the college out of which 104 (84.6%) are males and 19 (15.4%) females. Regarding their academic rank, 91 (74.6%) are lecturers whereas 20 (16.3%) are assistant professors holding PhD degrees. From the total 123 academic staff, 34 (27.6%) are on study leave in Ethiopia and abroad. Out of them, 24 (70.6%) are males while 10 (29.4%) are females. With regard to their academic level 31 (91%) are pursuing their PhD study whereas 3 (9%) are studying to hold an MA/MSc degree.

Each department has graduated significant numbers of trainees in various programs and also has large amount of trainees in the pipeline.
The college of Social Sciences and Humanity is currently running different postgraduate programs, coordinated by the college’s Postgraduate Office. At present, it has been training students in regular, weekend and summer programs in the departments of Geography and Environmental Studies, Afan Oromo and Literature, Sociology and Social Work as well as English Language and Literature. All these departments have been educating candidates in summer program with the exception of Sociology and Social Work department.
The college has been running the postgraduate programs with experienced and senior staff members who are PhD holders and who have dedication as well as professional integrity in Arsi University. They have played pivotal role to train and graduate hundreds of students in postgraduate programs in the past years.
The college has centers at Bekoji (main campus), Assela and Adama and is very enthusiastic to enroll and train new candidates in these centers who want to pursue their postgraduate studies in the departments of Geography and Environmental Studies, Afan Oromo and Literature, Sociology and Social Work as well as English Language and Literature.
