Message of RPD
Everywhere, the development of universities is a key community demand. Based on Arsi community driven and great interests, Arsi University was established as one of the Public Universities by the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in September 2014. As research is one of the three pillars of the University mission, the research activities in Arsi University are aimed to contribute towards the overall development of the country and the region; produce professionals with basic knowledge and skills in research. In addition, it is also geared to generate knowledge that lead to understanding of multi-disciplinary issues of the community; and to produce knowledge that helps the regional as well as the federal government to formulate appropriate developmental policies and strategies.
Since its establishment, Arsi University has been undertaking different research and extension projects by recognizing community needs based problems/applied researches including mega projects as per key areas or themes of the university. The Research and Publication Directorate (RPD) has been conducting this work through the staff in collaboration with various stakeholders to serve the community and raise integration with the community for positive change.
Research, extension and publication were done predominantly by the leading and organizing of RPD office in accordance with its core mission in closest collaboration with all colleges and school to promote practical research culture and dissemination of findings to end-users and appropriate stakeholders and to the ongoing efforts to ensure quality learning and teaching with the ultimate goal of cultivating and nurturing the new generation for the future of Ethiopia.
To realize the entire mission related with research, extension and publication, RPD is act under the Research and Community Services vice President as one of the directorate. The RPD has two coordinators (academic staff) i.e. Research and Extension, and Publication, Documentation and Dissemination and one Research and Extension expert (administrative staff) under it. The research, extension and publication activities are done in the closest collaboration with five colleges and one school deans and research and community services vice deans. Each department under colleges and school were actively engaged starting from proposal development, evaluation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation till the final result submission.
For advancing and facilitation of research and extension objectives, Arsi University has different research centers or sites under different colleges. Under the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, there are five research sites that enable interaction between faculty, scholars, students, and industry to enhance research opportunities, academic excellence, real-world problem solving, facilitate collaboration in research, coupled with an interdisciplinary outlook toward research, knowledge creation and dissemination, secure research resources, offer a sense of community and promote continued learning, afford organizational flexibility, and focus on societal problems and raise funds.
College of Health Science has Dembel Chilalo Research Site at Itaya town named as Demographic and Health Research Surveillance Site (DHRSS) used to monitors births, deaths, causes of death, migration, marriages, divorces, changes in status and household relationships, fertility estimates, and other health and socio-economic indicators within a population over time that is living in selected geographic area for a better understanding of the health and demographic dynamics of the population under observation. It is also used to generate relevant public health data, and to create local capacity for longitudinal data collection and management systems in selected area. Under the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Institute of Oromo Research (IOR) was established for the aim of studying the overall cultural aspects of catchment area’s community since the culture is the lifeblood of a vibrant society, expressed in the many ways we tell our stories, celebrate, remember the past, entertain ourselves, and imagine the future and document whether it is tangible or intangible culture and heritage that enhances the quality of life and increases overall well-being; bring community members together in a fun and constructive environment for both individuals and communities through the use of events, festivals, and workshops.
Getting a research project published in an accredited journal holds benefits for both the researcher and the institution hosting the journal. It is through publication that the research, including its scientific and practical contributions, is disseminated to others in a particular field. This makes scientific researchers and practitioners with similar interests aware of new knowledge in their field and it helps to advance knowledge and its application.
To achieve these benefits of journal, Journal of Arsi University; Arsi Journal of Sciences and Innovations (AJSI; ISSN: 2520-4963) was accredited nationally which is a multidisciplinary journal that is published twice a year (in May and October). Its aim is to disseminate scientific theories, research outcomes, and innovative and novel methods in science and technology to the local, national, and international communities.
To achieve our university mission, it is essential to strengthen substantially the unique partnership that has long existed among the community at large, key stakeholders at national and international level, the federal government, the regional states, by enhancing their individual and institutional roles and the links among them for stronger partnership for knowledge expansion and innovation; economic development; enhance capabilities of human capital; and societal well-being and quality of life.
Therefore, I am calling up on all concerned stakeholders at national and international level and the University community to work diligently in coordination and collaboration for implementation and success of our university mission regarding research, extension and publication to contribute for the holistic development of the country.
