Vision
The highly inspired vision of the department is producing competent, critical, scientifically equipped and epistemologically enriched trainees to significantly contribute in sound development endeavors at societal, national and international arenas.
Mission
The department’s mission is offering education that emphasizes on the pursuit of knowledge through instruction, research and development promoting critical thinking, understanding of social realities and reacting to problems or dealing with national and international issues.     

  •  Objectives of History and Heritage Management Department

The main objectives of the department are to:
• produce professionals with clear world view and ability to relate their profession with local, regional, national and international dynamics and create polymath candidates who can give a good knowledge of history  for the benefit of posterity;
• produce professionals who are well versed in various aspects of the past (environmental, political, economic, social and ethnographic intricacies);
• create skilled personnel and professionals who carry out research in the political, economic, social and cultural history;
• train full-fledged researchers committed to the discipline of history and heritage management to tackle the problem of the society using the potentials and possibilities embedded in the profession;
• produce scholars with tradition of tolerance towards ethnic and cultural diversity.

4.   Objectives of UG/BA Program

4.1. General Objective

The Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Heritage Management is designed to produce graduates who have a sound knowledge of history in general and an appreciation of multiculturalism and regional history in particular. The degree is designed to prepare graduates for employment in fields requiring a firm foundation in interpretive, analytical, research, and communication skills.

 4.2. Specific Objectives  

Upon completion of the B.A. in History and Heritage Management program, the student will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate a broad knowledge of History and Heritage Management and its role in society  
  • Acquire a breadth of historical knowledge across a range of periods and regions and to encourage consideration of links and comparisons between them 
  • Promote depth of understanding of historical concepts such as change and continuity, causation and motivation, as well as period-specific concepts such as nationalism, revolution and colonization 
  • Develop understanding of historical sources and the methods used by historians 

Be critical, reflective and independent, able to interpret and evaluate historical source material and offer substantiated explanations to historical questions

5.1. Professional Profile

Professionals of History and Heritage Management are expected to:  

  • Conduct researches in the fields of History and Heritage Management  
  • Teach history in educational institutions   
  • Analyze History and Heritage Management experts in different institutions and at different levels  
  • Manage many tasks as experts in the areas of intra and inter-ethnic and intra and inter religious relations  
  • Engage in tourism and museum sectors as guides, curators, experts, and managers at different levels  
  • Train and teach History and Heritage Management in higher and other institutions

5.2. Graduate Profile  

Graduates in History and Heritage Management are equipped with good knowledge and skills in the fields of history and cultural studies that enable them:  

  • .    Undertake scientific research in historical, historiographical and cultural aspects

                   of Ethiopia and the Horn.   

  • Document Heritages of the peoples of Ethiopia and the Horn at local, national, and regional levels  
  • Manage Heritages of the peoples of Ethiopia and the Horn at local, national, and regional levels.  
  • Advise or provide consultancy services to governmental and non-governmental organizations and private enterprises on History and Heritage Management issues at local, national, and regional level.
  • Engage in the tourism and museum sectors as guides, curators, experts, and managers  
  • Serve as History and Heritage Management experts in local, national, regional, and international institutions  
  • Serve as experts in the areas of intra and inter-ethnic and intra and inter religious relations of the region 
  • Analyze the socio-economic and environmental impact on the wellbeing of heritage resources 
  • Design mechanisms for preserving historical and cultural heritages of Ethiopia

6.  Program Requirements

6.1. Admission Requirements  

As per the criteria of Ministry of Science and Higher Education: 

  • Social Sciences background preferable 
  • An experience of teaching in history, but not mandatory; 
  • Transfer from other universities will take the following points into account, “F” free in all subjects; CGPA 2.00  
  • Readmission as per Senate Legislations of respective universities.

6.2.  Duration of the Program

Four Years including Fresh man Year.

      6.3. Graduation Requirements  

All students are expected to take a minimum of 142 and a maximum of 145 credit hours total. Students who successfully complete all courses with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 and have no “F” grade will be legible for graduation.

  • Teaching Learning Methods and Mode of Delivery

The three systems such as block, parallel and semester based will be put into practice depending on the nature of the courses and also by taking into consideration the availability of materials and the required human power.  The program gives more emphasis to active learning or student centered. However, a combination of interactive study and lecture-based teaching techniques are jointly applied in the teaching learning environment. Besides, the department will organize different types of collaborative-learning including group work, panel discussions, public lectures, guest lecturers, seminars, and workshops on various overriding issues and topics of Ethiopian, African, world history and issues related to heritage in order to improve the analytical skill and competence of the students. Mention should also be made on field works which assist the students to relate theories with practice.

  • Assessment and Evaluation Mechanisms  

Assessment and evaluation are conducted in binary ways. The first one is continuous assessment which includes term papers, classroom presentation, assignments, quizzes, individual and group works etc. The second one is final (summative) examination.  Generally, continuous assessment covers 50% of the evaluation; whereas final exam covers the remaining 50%. Forthesis, seminars & reports, presentation will be based on quality, organization, language & relevance of paper presented on historical and heritage- oriented issues, way of presentation and defending material presented.

  • Rigorous examination of BA theses and grading of seminar work.
