Historical Background of College of Health Sciences

As one of higher education institution the university is established with mandate of performing three core processes: Academic, Research & Community Engagement). In this regard, the college of health science is one of the entities of Arsi University. The college based its campus in the center of Asella town (the capital of Arsi Zone). The college (the then School of Nursing) was established in 1992 with mandate of teaching nursing students. While in 2004 it was upgraded & organized as Asella College of health science holding three departments that had been teaching Clinical Nursing, Midwifery & Pharmacy in diploma level and the college had been accountable to Oromia Regional Health Bureau. In 2011 the school of health sciences incorporating the Asella hospital included under Adama Science & Technology University and had been staring teaching Medicine undergraduate program in addition to the existing departments. Then after, in 2007 the College of health sciences was incorporated into Arsi University as one entity. Since then under Arsi University the college had been producing competent professionals in seven undergraduate programs (Anesthesia, Medicine, Midwifery, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health), and Seven postgraduate programs (six regular postgraduate programs: Clinical Anesthesia, Maternity & Reproductive Health Nursing, four medical specialty programs: Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatrics & Child Health and).

Main Achievements

The college of health sciences, since its establishment under ASTU, has been producing competent graduates in different discipline both in undergraduate & PG studies.
