Arsi University was established in October 2014, emerging as a comprehensive institution of higher education in Ethiopia. The university is composed of five colleges and one school.
Before becoming part of Arsi University, the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science and the College of Health Sciences had a long history of service in vocational education and training (TVET) for over 50 years. The College of Agriculture, in particular, was established through collaboration between the Swedish government and the Ethiopian government, marking it as the first modern agricultural mechanization site in the region, with a legacy spanning over 75 years.
The remaining colleges and the School of Law were transitioned from Adama University, which restructured to become a science and technology university. This transition facilitated the establishment of Arsi University as a comprehensive institution, enhancing its capacity to offer diverse academic programs.
In 2021, the Ethiopian government Ministry of Education categorized universities into research, applied, and comprehensive types. Arsi University was classified as an Applied science University, emphasizing its commitment to applied sciences and practical education.
