The Hirsch Institute of Tropical Medicine (HITM) was founded in cooperation with the Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) and the official inauguration took place in October 16th, 2013.

In December 2014, the Campus in Asella separated from ASTU and the successful cooperation now continues with the newly founded Arsi University. Thanks to a generous donation of Mr Wolfgang Hirsch (Duesseldorf, Germany) the institute was built on the Campus of the Asella Teaching Hospital, College of Health Science. Furthermore, equipment and maintenance are also mostly financed by donations.

The institute and its associated cooperation shall provide a platform for high-quality education, know-how transfer and research in Asella. Training and research activities focus on infectious diseases, especially coinfections, comprising most pressing clinical problems like HIV, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis and parasitic infections (e. g.  malaria, relapsing fever, cystic echinococcosis and schistosomiasis).

Training programmes, such as hand-on workshops, seminars and exchange programmes for Ethiopian colleagues in Duesseldorf are part of the cooperation agreement. Additionally, two German scientists are permanently based in Asella in order to facilitate the coordination of the institute. The establishment of the institute represents an important step towards internationalisation of the Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases Department in Düsseldorf and offers training opportunities in the field of tropical medicine for its physicians.
