Research and Community Engagement

College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences College possesses a semi-intensive dairy farm established by a Swedish government in 1967 GC. The dairy farm is currently comprises more than 250 cross breed Holstein Friesian dairy cows having different blood levels ranging from 62-99% and 52 Boran heifers for cross breeding. Now days the farm is producing about 500 liters of milk per day and distributing to the surrounding community. The farm has a plan to produce and multiply cross breed dairy heifers to disseminate to the surrounding farming community and be able to produce sustainable income to the University.

Currently the farm has a land resource of 154 hectars to develop adaptable animal feed resources and different highland crops.

The main objectives of the farm are:

  • Produce organic dairy, vegetable, fruits and other products for the nearby community.
  • Generate internal revenue for the university
  • Provide the surrounding community with improved breeds of livestock
  • Provide the surrounding community with semen, liquid nitrogen and other technologies
  • Provide training to the surrounding communities in agricultural technologies
  • Provide site for research and practical training

Research and Community Service Undertaken

  • Currently the college is running about 38 Research projects and 14 community service projects
  • As part of community service, the college has been giving training on different agricultural technologies
  • Indigenous tree seedling raising and dissemination(Annually more than 7000 seedlings were disseminated)
  • Support for historical places in Arsi zone like “Anole” financially and through provision of books and planting indigenous trees.
  • Material support to schools (Chalk, black boards, dusters, duplicating papers, TV)
  • Provision of quality standardized milk for University and surrounding community.
  • Provision of agricultural products like butter, fruits, vegetables, honey and others to the community with subsidized price.
  • Multiplication and distribution of improved seeds of cereal crops like wheat and forage seeds
  • Improving dairy animal genetic resource through cross breeding between Holstein Friesian and Boran breed
  • Training and certification of about 120 Artificial insemination technicians in collaboration with Oromia Livestock and Fisheries Development Bureau
  • Provision of consultation and advisory service for the surrounding farming community
  • Working in the area of sanitary on solid and liquid waste management in Asella town
